Q1. Describe the circumstances leading to the outbreak of revolutionary protest in France.
Answer (English):
The main causes of the French Revolution were:
- Empty Treasury: Long wars and the luxurious court of Louis XVI increased government debt.
- Tax Inequality: The First and Second Estates enjoyed privileges, while the Third Estate paid taxes.
- Rise in Bread Prices: Population growth increased food demand, but grain production could not keep pace.
- Low Wages: Workers’ wages did not increase with rising prices.
These conditions increased inequality and led to the French Revolution.
Q2. Which groups of French society benefited from the revolution? Which groups were forced to relinquish power? Which sections of society would have been disappointed with the outcome of the revolution?
Answer (English):
The Third Estate benefited the most from the revolution. It included peasants, artisans, workers, merchants and lawyers. The First and Second Estates, consisting of the clergy and nobility, lost their special privileges. However, women and poorer sections who did not receive equal political rights would have been disappointed.
Q3. Describe the legacy of the French Revolution for the peoples of the world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Answer (English):
The French Revolution spread the ideas of liberty, equality and democratic rights. These ideas helped end feudal systems in Europe. Colonised people used the idea of freedom to fight for independence and establish sovereign nation-states. Tipu Sultan and Rammohan Roy were influenced by these ideas.

Q5. Would you agree with the view that the message of universal rights was beset with contradictions? Explain.
Answer (English):
Yes, the message of universal rights had contradictions because women were excluded from equal rights. They did not enjoy the same rights to liberty, property and security as men. They also lacked representation in law-making and equal opportunities in public employment.
Q6. How would you explain the rise of Napoleon?
Answer (English):
Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of France and conquered neighbouring countries. He introduced laws protecting private property and a uniform system of weights and measures based on the decimal system. His reforms spread revolutionary ideas and modern laws across Europe. He was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.
