- Russian peasants periodically pooled their land and redistributed it among families according to their needs through the village commune called the mir.
Question 3. Why did the Tsarist autocracy collapse in 1917?
Answer:
The Tsarist autocracy collapsed in 1917 due to the following reasons:
- Autocratic rule: Tsar Nicholas II refused to share political power and ignored the demands of the people.

Kulaks were wealthy peasants in Russia. During Stalin’s collectivisation programme, they were targeted as opponents of collective farming. Many resisted the government’s policies.

The Duma was an elected consultative Parliament established during the 1905 Revolution. Tsar Nicholas II repeatedly dismissed the Dumas because he did not want his authority to be questioned.
(c) Women workers between 1900 and 1930
Women constituted about 31% of the factory workforce in Russia by 1914. They received lower wages than men and played an important role in strikes and demonstrations, particularly during the February Revolution of 1917.
(d) The Liberals
Liberals wanted religious tolerance, individual rights, representative government and an elected parliament. However, they did not support universal adult franchise and generally opposed voting rights for women.
(e) Stalin’s collectivisation programme
Stalin introduced collectivisation to combine individual peasant farms into large collective farms. Peasants were expected to cultivate land collectively, and the government controlled agricultural production. Wealthy peasants, known as kulaks, resisted these policies.

(Kulaks)
(Duma)
(Liberals)
