2. Answer the following questions briefly.
(i) What factors are responsible for the distribution of plants and animals in India?
Answer:
The distribution of plants and animals in India depends mainly on relief and climate. Relief includes land and soil, while climate includes temperature, photoperiod and precipitation. Different combinations of these factors create different natural habitats. Therefore, different types of vegetation and wildlife are found in different parts of India.

(ii) What is a bio-reserve? Give two examples.
Answer:
A bio-reserve is a protected area created to conserve plants, animals and their natural environment. It helps in protecting biodiversity and maintaining the natural ecosystem. Two examples are Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve.

(iii) Name two animals having habitat in tropical and montane type of vegetation.
Answer:
Two animals found in tropical vegetation are elephant and tiger. Two animals found in montane vegetation are snow leopard and Tibetan antelope. The type of wildlife varies according to the vegetation and climatic conditions of the region.

3. Distinguish between the following
(i) Flora and Fauna
| Basis | Flora | Fauna |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Plants of a particular region or period are called flora. | Species of animals are referred to as fauna. |
| Examples | Trees, grasses, shrubs etc. | Tiger, elephant, deer etc. |
(ii) Tropical Evergreen Forests and Tropical Deciduous Forests
| Basis | Tropical Evergreen Forests | Tropical Deciduous Forests |
|---|---|---|
| Rainfall | More than 200 cm | 70–200 cm |
| Leaf fall | Trees do not shed leaves at a definite time and remain green throughout the year. | Trees shed their leaves during the dry season. |
| Other name | — | Also called Monsoon Forests |
| Climate | Hot and wet throughout the year with a short dry season. | Seasonal rainfall with a dry period. |
| Examples | Ebony, mahogany, rosewood, rubber and cinchona. | Teak, sal, shisham, sandalwood, khair, kusum and arjun. |
4. Name different types of vegetation found in India. Describe the vegetation of high altitudes.
Answer:
The five major types of vegetation found in India are:
- Tropical Evergreen Forests
- Tropical Deciduous Forests
- Tropical Thorn Forests and Scrubs
- Montane Forests
- Mangrove Forests
At high altitudes, the type of vegetation changes with increasing height. Between about 1,500 and 3,000 metres, temperate forests with coniferous trees such as pine, deodar, silver fir, spruce and cedar are found. At still higher altitudes, the forests gradually give way to alpine vegetation and grasslands. Above about 3,600 metres, alpine vegetation is commonly found.

5. Why have a few species of plants and animals become endangered?
Answer:
A few species of plants and animals have become endangered because of the indiscriminate destruction of forests and natural habitats. Human activities such as expansion of agriculture, industries and settlements have reduced their natural habitats. Hunting and other harmful activities have also affected wildlife. As a result, the number of some species has declined greatly and they are now in danger of extinction.

6. Why has India a rich heritage of flora and fauna?
Answer:
India has a rich heritage of flora and fauna because it has a great variety of landforms, soils, climate, temperature and rainfall. These varied physical conditions provide suitable habitats for different types of plants and animals. India has mountains, plains, plateaus, deserts, coastal areas and islands, which support a wide variety of natural vegetation and wildlife.
